So fall is here, and this season's shows are underway. Orange Anime's membership took charge this season to post up their initial thoughts and reviews for the fall season. Fall is seen as a season of change. The leaves change color. The summer vacation ends for some, and hot, hot weather begins to cool down. Following that idea, I decided to change how I did this lineup post. Instead of just posting my own thoughts, I'm going to take quotes from our membership and their thoughts about the shows they started to watch. Read on to see their thoughts for the Fall 2009 Anime Lineup...
"This is basically this season's Fullmetal Alchemist type show. A bunch of superpowered "Librarians" fighting a war against some religious organization whose tenant is, 'Do whatever you damn well please in the name of God.' Complete with ordinary people getting caught in the cross fire (librarians want to help them, cultists want to use them). Lotsa magic, lotsa splosion, lotsa dead people, and lotsa drama to come."[Kago] "Armed Librarians... well the strange powers seemed really silly, but I couldn't laugh because it's far too serious." [Stewart]
"This seasons Under Water Ray Romano (referring to Utawarerumono), Tears to Tiara, etc. Forbidden magics, warring kingdoms, and girls in less than optimal armor. The main character looks like Sasuke. It reminds me of Thousand Arms but with the perversion cranked waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down." [Kago]
"This is a harem comedy with magical problem solving twist, And no, I will not make any 'pussy' jokes about this show--it's just too easy. The main guy is allergic to cats but, due to a curse, is able to understand and communicate with cats and must help solve a hundred cat problems or turn into one. His family's cat turns out to be about as much of an haughty bitch as he always thought she was. Random hilarious hi-jinks and woman troubles ensue." [Kago]
"The girl looks like Sadako from The Ring which makes her creepy and unpopular. She likes the most popular boy in school. He starts paying attention to her. She starts coming out of her shell and turns out to be a really nice girl. The animation style reminds me of Honey and Clover. It looks to be a very relaxed and easy going romantic comedy. Don't expect any overly crazy, random, psychotic stuff out of this one. If you want something more soothing to watch, it's this season's choice." [Kago] "Kimi no Todoke is going to be a little cheesy in the romance aspects, but seems like a good story nonetheless." [Stewart]
"About a girl who comes from... somewhere else (where exactly has yet to be specified). Apparently she has a wish she wants granted and in order to make it come true, she has to collect broken hearts in a magic flask. Despite that description it is, surprisingly, NOT a magical girl show (well at least not in episode 1 anyway). Very sweet, very girly, but still humorous and watchable. CLAMP is involved so the art is damn good." [Kago] "I might continue with a few more episodes of Kobato, but the plot is weird and nothing about the girl (her origin, her wish) has been really explained so I may just stick with it until that happens." [Stewart] "Kobato is gradually turning into another of CLAMPs weird crossover/multiverse shows." [Kago]
"This season's show that makes fun of other shows. One guy (nice guy/pervert) and four girls (random stereotypes) make up the student council, but all they mainly do is sit around, shoot the breeze, and talk about random things. The guy wants the show to be a harem show, while the girls... not so much. The show mainly takes place in and around the student council room, so not much 'action' takes place, though there is a bit of slapstick and fanservice. If you consider yourself a pretty 'hardcore' anime fan, this is one of those shows where you can just sit around and play 'spot the reference'." [Kago]
"Gender-switching, magic, and talking plushies with their guts hanging out. Natsuru is an average high school boy, until a magical blue bracelet appears and he transforms into a female pyrokinetic fighter called a Kämpfer. Kämpfers are divided into three types, (sword wielders, gun wielders, and magic users), as well as competing factions determined by the color of their bracelets. A little fanservice, lots of fighting, a bit of romance, a girl with her mind constantly in the gutter, and talking disemboweled plushies." [Chibitrunks] "If anyone liked Tenjho Tenge or Ikkitousen, you should check out Kämpfer." [Stewart]
"A high school boy finds an angel that fell from the sky and whose purpose is to grant her master’s every wish. Sweet deal right? But be careful what you wish for… because she cannot cancel orders once they are received. Kind of reminds me of Ah! My Goddess, if Keiichi were a perverted little egotist and there was more fanservice and a little bondage." [Chibitrunks] "If you think DearS with angels, only a bit more perverted, then you'll be pretty close to the idea." [Kago]
"The world is primarily a wasteland covered by darkness and inhabited by gigantic insects. Human settlements are few and far between. The main method of communication between settlements is by letter, which are handled by the Super Mailmen known as Letter Bees. Stylistically and artistically, it reminds me alot of D.Gray Man, with lots of blues, blacks, purples, and silvers, but with a bit of the youthfulness and story elements of Hunter Hunter. Seeing as this is a Shonen Jump title, chances are this show is gonna get a decent run and might possibly turn into something big." [Kago]
"Kakeru’s right eye has a mystical power which transports him and several friends to a place called 'Red Night,' where a black moon hangs in the sky and blobby tentacle monsters rise from the ground to attack the friends. I have only seen the first episode so far, but it looks interesting. Decent art style." [Chibitrunks]
"Lucy, a wizard who controls celestial spirits by forming contracts with them tries to join Fairy Tail, a wizard guild. She meets Natsu, a member of Fairy Tail, who has incredible powers over fire, but who tends to destroy pretty much everything in his path as he rescues people. He invites her to join Fairy Tail, and she joins him and a talking, flying cat as they take odd wizarding jobs and quests. I have been reading the manga, and I have been liking that, so I hope it doesn’t deviate too much from the manga. It reminds me of One Piece, both in art style and because the main character is an unbelievably chipper, yet powerful person." [Chibitrunks] "It does seem very One Piece-ish, but there is a reason for that. Hiro Mashimo (the Manga-ka) is a self admitted HUGE fan of Oda and modeled a good deal of his style after Oda's, so much so that alot of people have mistaken Fairy Tail art for One Piece art." [Kago]
"When someone is in trouble, they may find themselves on the miracle train, where the spirits of the train stations on the Oedo line try to aid them. Each of the six station spirits has their own stereotyped personality (Shinjuku is a skirt chasing pretty boy, Tokyo is the proud and slightly stuck-up leader, etc.). Art is ok, but the plot seems weak." [Chibitrunks]
"A small girl, Ichigo, has an amazing sense for pastries and wants to be a great patisserie like her grandmother. She enrolls in a Japanese branch division of a famous Parisian pastry school. The first episode was pretty good if you like that sort of thing. It reminded me of Yakitate Japan in the original premise." [Stewart] "After episode 2 it turns into, basically, a cooking school version of a high school "romantic" comedy. It has a harem of super elite pretty boys, a score of jealous girls, and a helpfull litte fairy (mascot character) to keep things from getting too realistic. It's all disturbingly sweet and innocent." [Kago]
"If you were a fan of the original series, then rejoice for this series returns even more ecchi than before. If you were not a fan of the original, you probably won't like this either. Episode 1 was basically a constant stream of fanservice, cheap sex jokes, and in-series references, and I really don't expect much from the rest of the series. Bottom line: If you like the show, it's more of the same, minus most of the TV censorship restrictions as this is an OVA." [Kago]
No doubt there's a handful of people on Orange Anime keeping tabs on this show.
If you've seen the poster or screen caps, you know this is a wildly colorful anime. I'll catch the first episode to see if there's something more going on.
Let's compress 11 episodes of awesome into 1 movie...
This comes out at the end of November 2009. Based on the fact that we still haven't seen any for the recap above, I think 2010 will be coming around before we see this. However, when it does come out, I'm not the only person who will be waiting for this.
I've seen both seasons and the second season had a weird ending. That won't stop me, however, from feeling nostalgic about this TV special and watching it. Just remember, perverted things are forbidden.
Based on seinen yuri manga... yes, I'll be watching this when I get the time.
I hope this show pans out, but it'll probably be a sleeper due to the subject matter. The show will contain six modern classics in Japanese literature. That can be some dry subject matter for some, but I'm looking forward to it.
And that's it for this time... I want to thank the members of Orange Anime (Kago, Stewart, Chibitrunks) whose posts were quoted in the first section. Join us in our Anime forums for further discussion of these shows or any anime you like.
